We only need ONE good DE and ONE good WM.
The problem is none of them is fully qualified for this, they all are "almost" there, so in lack of "perfection" every time raises a new dev with new ideas and tries his luck, then he gathers a few others and they start developing yet a new one.
If all the FOSS community would for once put aside ego and other bulls**t, we could all make two or three alternatives that are all as good, and they're all "friendly" to all distros and/or other DEs and WMs components, but this will never happen, so we'll keep seeing many disappear as well as new raise up.
